March's Birthstone: Cool and Serene Aquamarine

The many shades of Aquamarine available in Amy Zane jewelry.

March is almost here, and bright Aquamarine reminds us that clear blue skies are just around the corner! Regarded as a stone that symbolizes youth, health, and hope, it's a perfect gift for March babies.

"Aquamarine" means seawater, and the stone certainly shows the range of blue water hues. We love the cool and tranquil light blue variety, as well as the deeper tones of Moss Aquamarine, shown above.

February's Birthstone: Bright and Beautiful Amethyst

February is here! This month's beautiful birthstone is the bright and beautiful amethyst. Ranging in hues from light lilac to vivid purple, this stone is simply a classic.

Amy's lovely double drop amethyst earrings.

These double drop amethyst earrings would make a great gift for any February birthday, but they're so lovely and wearable that we won't tell if you gift them to yourself...

Long considered a powerful stone of protection, amethyst has been a favorite since ancient times and its allure isn't going away any time soon! From Greek mythology:

Amethyst was a young virgin who became the object of wrath of the Greek God Dionysus after he became intoxicated with red wine. When Amethyst cried out to Goddess Diana for help, she immediately turned the girl into a white, shimmering stone (quartz). When Dionysus realized what had happened and felt remorse for his actions, his tears dripped into his goblet of red wine. The goblet overturned, and the red wine spilled all over the white rock, saturating it until it became the purple quartz that is now known as Amethyst.

Catholic bishops, Grecian kings, even Saint Valentine himself prize the amethyst for its powers of protection, healing, and purity.

Holy wow! An excellent specimen of Amethyst Stalagtite.

Of course, for the more daring, Amy loves the striking beauty of the Amethyst Stalactite, which is formed when the purple crystal forms on the outside of huge cave formations. Now that's a conversation starter!

January's Birthstone: Rich and Regal Garnet

January's birthstone is the beautifully deep and moody garnet. It's perfect for the first month of the year: garnet traditionally symbolizes rebirth, strength, and a fresh start. Garnet sprang to fame in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe: the Victorian era of jewelry. From the Latin for seed, red garnet resembles the jeweled seeds of a pomegranate!

Like winter berries against white winter snow, Garnet sure does pop!

The regal red variety shown here isn't the only shade, however; we have lovely green, yellow, and orange-hued garnets in store as well. Grossular garnet comes in a variety of earthy tones, and Hessonite garnet is found in lovely warm hues.

Grossular Green Garnet--seen here in Amy's lovely cascade-style necklace--ranges in hue from warm brown to vibrant green.

Even if traditional red garnet isn't your style, there is so much diversity in the garnet family! Stop in store or shop online for the perfect gift for January babies.

December's Birthstone: Blue Topaz

Blue topaz is one of many accepted birthstones--you could also substitute turquoise or tanzanite, but we love the bright, vivid clarity of these lovely stones. These cool, almost transparent stones remind us of a bright December day. Traditionally a symbol of love and affection, we can't think of a more meaningful gift for a December baby.

So crisp and clear--perfect for December!

Blue topaz is available in a variety of hues: Sky Blue, Swiss Blue, and London Blue topaz refer to the depth of color in the stone, London being the darkest. Of course you could also spring for Tanzanite, an increasingly rare stone found only in Tanzania, also an accepted December birthstone. Shop in store or online for your December gifts!

Stunning and substantial Tanzanite.

November's Birthstone: Warm and Lovely Citrine

November birthdays are affiliated with two gems; Citrine and Topaz. Citrine is a warm, almost transparent stone that ranges from dark honey tones to pale light yellows. Its lovely warm color is said to be a gift from the sun revered for its healing powers.

Amy's selection of Citrine jewelry ranges from warm and earthy to crisp and clean.

Topaz is available in a variety of vibrant colors, like blue, pink, and yellow, but is most desired in its rich orange state. These wild mystic topaz earrings are a great example of the diversity of the stone.

When clear topaz is treated with a thin coating, its magical rainbow properties are enhanced: creating a truly vibrant and unique effect!

Both citrine and topaz are available in many varieties in store and online. Get a gift for a November baby today!
